Founders
Neishaa & Pretam Gharat, founders of House of Gharats, endeavour to bring together various cultures, redefine cultural relationships, and create new style synergies through art and fashion. Living amidst London’s international hybrid city of cultures and its influential past results in objects that are profoundly modern, distinctively stylish, yet inherently classic.

We are passionate about heritage arts and crafts, engaging with the makers and the process. Therefore our designs draw on the essence of tradition, cultural juxtapositions, stories, materials and function. In addition, heritage crafts, unconventional materials, sculptural tailoring, bold colours, fanciful details and artful prints speak our story. Our commitment is to make responsibly through sustainable practices.

The future of retail is the technologies that are improving every day, mostly all retailers will be relying on media to take care of sales. The retail business will change drastically with the current situation of the world and also the rising demand for online shopping.

My three key internship objectives are to observe and participate in real-time projects and decision-making. To work alongside and network with leading professionals in the industry. And to also apply my knowledge and artistic abilities within the role.
There are a number of things about the brand that instantly catch my attention. The range of scarves styles and burst of colours are without a doubt something which I admire naturally. From the layout of the images on the website to the very visuals it really communicates a concise layout, theme and a succesful aesthetic for the brand.
The first point which I feel I connect with is the thought process of each design. From the colour choices, compositions, art language, and the distinctiveness but concise approach to design choices being made through out each scarf. Personally, I feel each design communicates a strong sense of story and identity. As well as also evoking an historic narrative.
The second point which grasped my undivided attention was the Sustainabilty factor. It is so important for any brand in this current and moving forward in time, to be aware and be responsible for making sustainable choices for the business. It is so important for a brand to consider such factors and be responsible for them. And House of Gharat continuously promotes this important factor which is really powerful.
Finally, a strong brand identity with personality and hope! “Family Business hoping to change the world ‘one scarf at a time’!” Not only as a designer but as a consumer’s point of view this quote is food for thought. It instantly captivated my attention and made me build a trust factor with the brand. And understand this brands values on how through each scarf not only is there a strong sense of awareness but also seeking to revive heritage and traditional craft.

The future of fashion is…
-Integrity, in the processes and materials, in a brand’s transparency, and in the industry and the need for diversity.
-Digital immersion, with the rise in AR fashion shows and experiences, customers can get the physical experience from the comfort of their own home.
-Regeneration of past techniques, designs, and traditions in order to formulate new styles and techniques. This carries through into the future of sustainable fashion, by regenerating what we already have to create something new. This can be done either by upcycling existing materials or by redesigning existing ones, such as the breakthrough in cotton dyeing (CSIRO scientists discovered how to grow coloured cotton).
The future of retail is…
-An experience both off and online. Brands are no longer two-dimensional icons, but multi-faceted experiences that use omnichannel marketing to connect to their customers on a variety of platforms.
-An open dialogue between the community, the customer, and the brand. This plays into all stages of the design process, from conceptualization to production, to the product life span.
-Personal. Customers are no longer looking for a brand void of personality and morals. One wants to invest in brands that align with their own perspectives and values.
Style from my point of view means…
-Communication and storytelling. Style is a form of freedom through self-expression, giving every individual the ability to visually communicate their identity, culture, and interests. This is why telling a story through textiles is so vital, as the clothes we wear are a reflection of ourselves, so why not create textiles that reflect your background and beliefs? In an over-saturated world, one wants to be an individual and stand out, so personal storytelling goes hand-in-hand with style and taste.

1. Through my work in my website portfolio and my final project it is evident that I like to use my culture and background to influence my work. On the website the quote “The influence of our native country, which can be felt through our collections, is grounded in tradition and timeless eccentricities, yet fearlessly modern.” means a lot to me as I do feel it is important to show part of you in your work as a designer and always remember where you come from but to bring it into new trends and modernise it.
2. The second reason I chose House of Gharats is because of the high quality and design aesthetic of the scarves, the bright, bold designs and compositions have a very luxury look.
3. The final reason is because of the sustainable aspect of the business and how they are conscious of the fabrics they use to create designs that are more environmentally aware.

The Future of Fashion is… customers, companies and all stakeholders realising that
they are running the industry in a wrong and destructive way. More than that, I think the
future is for them to realise that the detriment of the industry (which is only second after oil in regards to the volumes of waste and environmental degradation it amasses) is not worth ‘staying on trend’. The future of fashion is all stakeholders being strong and resilient and not giving in to the whims of fast fashion.
The Future of Retail is… truly depends on brands – especially the high street stores
that are sustaining fast fashion in all of our lives – making the effort to remove their vast collections, plastic packagings and encouragement of the customers to buy more, and focusing more a slower instore environment where garment care, durability and longeivity is at the focus. Etail is the only other option for brands and, as the customer become more conscious, I can see brands operating solely online as a future for retail. As a tactile person that sees fashion as tangible, wearable art, I hope this is not the case!
Style from my point of view means… expressing yourself, personality, interests and values
through wearable art that exaggerates, moulds or hides the body. There is so much that
can be conveyed through style – colour, print, silhouette and texture – that really give so many clues as to who a person identifies as. Style, to me, is a very personal concept. For instance, on a macro level, my style centres around sustainable clothes, which really correlates with my values and conscience. On a micro level, I love puffball sleeves and excessive prints, which I think conveys how creative, arty and expressive I am as a person
