Founders
Neishaa & Pretam Gharat, founders of House of Gharats, endeavour to bring together various cultures, redefine cultural relationships, and create new style synergies through art and fashion. Living amidst London’s international hybrid city of cultures and its influential past results in objects that are profoundly modern, distinctively stylish, yet inherently classic.

We are passionate about heritage arts and crafts, engaging with the makers and the process. Therefore our designs draw on the essence of tradition, cultural juxtapositions, stories, materials and function. In addition, heritage crafts, unconventional materials, sculptural tailoring, bold colours, fanciful details and artful prints speak our story. Our commitment is to make responsibly through sustainable practices.

In addition, they may embody fond memories or represent special people, but cherished things also reveal what we value—beauty, utility, knowledge, craft—and when assembled can function as a portrait in time.

It is a superpower and with it, we can change the world.
Therefore, we believe that social and environmental issues go hand in hand and through exploring the connection between these issues we may find innovative design solutions to sustainability.

The future of fashion is… daunting and scary with how the way fast fashion is working at the moment. “The UK is the epicentre of fast fashion in Europe, with each person buying an estimated 26.7kg of clothing every year, compared to an average 15.6kg for people across Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden” (Jasmine Chinasamy, 2019). With this in mind retail has no choice but to become more sustainable. House of Gharats creates designs that tell a story, which adds more meaning, creating long lasting designs. Invaluable designs and timeless pieces are worn more than just a few times.
The future of retail is…becoming more and more digital, shaping the way customers interact with textiles and art. This could mean fewer stores, however in the few stores left, customer service will be more important than ever, informing the customers of what has gone into that product, what is behind the patterns and colour palettes and telling more of a story.
Style from my point of view means…whatever you want it to be. Style is personal; one size does not fit all. It is what makes you feel comfortable, sexy and happy. Style can emit your personality, show your confidence, creativity and individuality. Style has no definition.

We need the world to realise that fashion is an art form, for those making clothes and those who are styling, using themselves as the canvas. Fast fashion has led to a disregard for the beauty that fashion brings to us as individuals, it has been taken advantage of. I do however believe with the right ethos and message people will learn to appreciate fashion again and respect it along with its materials, how they should be.
Sustainability is a key factor that plays into how we respond to our garments, using high quality materials that are more desirable helps to alleviate the disposable culture surrounded by so many high street and online retailers. The difficulty with this approach is, of course, accessibility. We need to be offering people from all backgrounds a way to consume ethical fashion that is financially viable to them.

The Textiles and Fashion industry is one of the most pollutant industries at this current time and the fast paced nature of it is partly to blame. I believe in a future of greener choices from design, to production, to market.
– The future of retail is changing. We are slowly but need to improve on becoming ‘big and money making’ to ‘small and problem solving’. Retail is a vital part of the fashion and textiles industry but it’s tactics must not be a cause for unethical practices but instead be an incentive for positive practices.

The future of retail is… somewhat moving online. Retail may be moving more toward the internet. But I believe this is only to some extent. Buyers still like the experience of feeling the fabric, mixing looks before buying, etc.
Style from my point of view means… a form of self-expression. I believe that the young dress a certain way in order to fit into society. Being the number two contributor to climate change, sustainability is the only option. Inventing new, interesting, eco-friendly textiles is the only avenue towards becoming a true revolutionary.
The future of retail is complex. Clothes are meant to be worn and felt, and a world where online shopping is the only option erases the experience of the fashion industry. I believe we’ll move towards a society where electronic measurements are taken by machine, then paired with items in-store that fit that body type best.
Style from my point of view is personal. Who we are is deeply embedded in what we wear, and clothing is the most natural form of self-expression we have. We share an intimate relationship with the garments and accessories in our closet, therefore, they should be as well-made and interesting as we are.

Emotionally durable design provides a personalize and strong bond between a usership and a garment as it is functional and easy to style but also manifests our values. It also expresses both brand’s and client’s commitment to sustainability.
The future of retail is creating a unique and interesting shopping experience for customers both on online platforms and in-store. I believe that clients will value more their purchases once they are able to customize and try products and be aware of their meaning, source and manifesto. Educating clients through transparent production and origin of the products make them feel engaged with their design and production process but also their impact on the climate. Providing all of that is transferring a purchase into a vulnerable investment.
Style from my point of view means having a personal link/connection with the pieces from our wardrobe in order to express yourself, your history better in society. I think that comfortable, easy to style clothes makes us more confident in our work and home environments and help us to interact with other people and cultures. Our style is reflecting the colours of our soul but also is a part of a self-care as a freedom of choice and expression.
