An Artful Life
House Of Gharats is a design house creating conscious luxury for artful dressing and living. The old and new play off one another in perfect harmony. There is an undeniable appreciation for tradition and the antiquated, but also so much creative progression – and a love for beauty.
Founders
Neishaa & Pretam Gharat, founders of House of Gharats, endeavour to bring together various cultures, redefine cultural relationships, and create new style synergies through art and fashion. Living amidst London’s international hybrid city of cultures and its influential past results in objects that are profoundly modern, distinctively stylish, yet inherently classic.
Culture Of Craft
We are passionate about heritage arts and crafts, engaging with the makers and the process. Therefore our designs draw on the essence of tradition, cultural juxtapositions, stories, materials and function. In addition, heritage crafts, unconventional materials, sculptural tailoring, bold colours, fanciful details and artful prints speak our story. Our commitment is to make responsibly through sustainable practices.

“The influence of our native country, which can be felt through our collections, is grounded in tradition and timeless eccentricities, yet fearlessly modern.”
– NEISHAA GHARAT

“There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness.”
– MAHATMA GANDHI
Loved and Enduring
The objects that we choose to surround ourselves with, tend to be those with the strongest and deepest connections to our past, present, and future. In addition, they may embody fond memories or represent special people, but cherished things also reveal what we value—beauty, utility, knowledge, craft—and when assembled can function as a portrait in time.
Design
Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives.
It is a superpower and with it, we can change the world.
Therefore, we believe that social and environmental issues go hand in hand and through exploring the connection between these issues we may find innovative design solutions to sustainability.

The future of fashion is imaginative, inclusive, sustainable and involved.
Imagination does not simply mean whimsy, creativity and expression — it includes a great sense of questioning, of challenging the way things are done while incorporating personal and collective memory and culture. Inclusivity means representation and accessibility at all levels of visibility for all, regardless of gender, race, class, or any construction that has historically made fashion an oppressive and/or exclusionary space. Sustainability prioritises our planet as an entity that must be honoured and protected by the fashion industry — not destroyed by its production and expansion. Involvement means that fashion will continue its evolving role as a key mode of expression for social change, serving as a space to communicate complex personal and collective ideas through art, style and design.
The future of retail is customisable, digital and personable.
The digital space currently allows many designers, artists and small businesses to grow and develop for a large audience. However, this space also makes it harder for creatives to get their work known, especially if they conform to a particular ‘trend.’ Trends will continue to exist, but will fade into a market that prioritises personal expression and uniqueness, making customisable styles and personal branding increasingly important.
Style from my point of view means expression and connection.
The joy I get from my own style comes from the emotional expression and connection I can make between thought and colour, idea and pattern, theory and texture. Style is a powerful outward expression of inward feelings and thoughts.
Olga Romanenko
The future of fashion lies within the culture of each brand. I feel like each specific company represents it’s own country in the unique way and is responsible for exploring and improving it’s people’s fashion.
The future of retail in my opinion is very bright. Nowadays, more and more people are being able to afford things they couldn’t years ago. This is a big progress in our times, which brings new clients into the world of fashion and this is happening very fast, giving the brands the opportunity to be as creative as they like and to make the sales go up.
Style from my point of view means a personal way of showing an idea/personality to others. It reflects who you are and what you do and is even responsible for switching moods:)

The future of fashion is sustainable and timeless, moving away from the mentality of fast fashion and consumerist culture. This means being circular and focussing less on trends and more on reworking, reusing and reinventing what already in exists in the fashion sphere.
The future of retail is focused on small businesses and using your money to support individuals and their vision over big corporations. It’s about connecting the business and customer through stories and personal anecdotes to offer an experience and not just a product.
Style from my point of view means wearing what reflects your individual personality and values, regardless of trends. Even those not interested in fashion still have style because it is unique to everyone and not something which can be bought.

Why I chose House Of Gharats
3 Things from the website that mean something to me:
Aesthetic
First of all I am absolutely in love with the design aesthetic, the use of vibrant colours and the way each design tells a story through the use of certain materials or quirky motives is amazing and so cheerful. The influence of Indian artisanship within a contemporary setting, is a great juxtaposition which honours the makers cultural background which is so important in todays design world. I began to admire Indian culture when I started practicing yoga and wanted to find out more about the roots of yoga and the philosophy behind it.
Sustainability
What sparked my interest for House of Gharats immediately is the approach to sustainable practices. “It is not a design for a sake of a design, it is a massage.” I love the way Neishaa uses her ‘superpower’ and set herself the goal to change the world one scarf at a time by educating the people through her designs. The fact that House of Gharats is much involved in protecting the ocean and uses not just visual inspiration but also materials from the ocean is very forward thinking.
Women
Another important fact about House of Gharats is the way the design house empowers women. Highlighting the role women play in the process of seaweed farming and within their designs is liberating.

The 3 main reasons why I chose house of Gharats
I love the cultural story behind the brand as it creates the narrative and has more meaning to it which makes it much more valuable.
The mix of old and new is something I always have tried to incorporate into my work and was excited to see that is something you do here. I love creating prints that use a mix of hand crafted elements as well as modern editing.
I am passionate about trying to make fashion/textiles more sustainable so would love to see how a this luxury brand that uses craftmanship tackles these challenges.

The future of fashion is sustainability, durability and a personal approach. Our awareness of the environment is forever growing but now more than ever we need to take those words and put them to action. The Fashion Industry has always been one of the least sustainable industries across the world and it is time for change whether that is developing new fabrics or eco-friendly processes. Durability works with the concept of buying fashion to last and not get rid of fast. A personal approach, more and more people are craving that idea of owning something unique and not replicated in large supply.
The future of retail is the personal touch and pockets of new businesses. Pop up shops are becoming increasingly popular, introducing new locally produced products and craftmanship. The personal touch is brought in by amazing customer service and styling advice creating the ultimate shopping experience.
Style from my point of view means personal identity, it shows the world who I am, what I have to say and potentially how I dress can even alter someone’s mood. If I were to wear bright colourful clothing and wore it confidently, that confidence and positive aesthetic can be shared and spread to others.
Ollie Tilney
The future of fashion is sustainable. Fast fashion has been responsible for an unsustainable amount of waste and pollution; we must alter the way in which we consume in order to reduce our environmental impact. Producing clothes that are not only timeless, but also high quality, allows us to shift the emphasis from fleeting trends to a more enduring sense of style. To quote Coco Chanel, ‘Fashion changes, but style endures.’
The future of retail is online. High street shopping is becoming increasingly unpopular, with more and more high street stores shutting down every year. As such, companies must build a stronger online shopping experience in order to compete and remain relevant in a changing industry.
Style from my point of view is a way of establishing identity. It can be a powerful tool to help people express their own individuality or their desire to fit in with a certain group. Regardless of whether you want to stand out or blend into the crowd, the clothes you wear make a big statement about who you are.

1) The future of fashion is sustainable. With the use of thrift stores, and online market places, as well as reusing and recycling old clothes, fashion is becoming more practical.
2) The future of retail within today’s climate, is going to be more based around the consumer, and how they shop. Due to COVID19, our retail experience has navigated itself online, and done from the comfort’s of our home. It’s safer, and less time consuming.
3) Style from my point of view is a way to express yourself, and is a part of someone’s personality, in a sense that it tells a story about someone. It reflects yourself, your values, your inspiration, your experiences, and should be seen as another form of art.
