British actresses Kate O’Flynn, Sarah Winter & Karen David, feature in The Protagonist Magazine AW 2016 .
The Protagonist Magazine offers in-depth articles about and interviews with protagonists of stage and screen and the art world. London-based editors Ram Shergill and Daen Palma Huse offer an insight into the world of fine art and fashion photography, illustration and contemporary art in an eclectic mix. As a collectible hardback book, The Protagonist Magazine revives the tradition of luxury magazine publications such as The Yellow Book, which was published in the 1890s.
The cover star of this issue is award-winning actress Helen McCrory, critically acclaimed for her complex roles in theatre and film. Her interview features alongside stories about actors Joe Dempsie, Kyle Soller, Joshua Sasse, and Kate O’Flynn. The theatre world is further discovered by looking at the intricacy of stage costumes of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
New York based artist Colin Verdi has contributed to this issue extensively, with each and every one of his hand-drawn characters born out of his vivid imagination. Also portrayed are the contemporary sculptors Diego Fortunato and Helidon Xhixha, who is exhibiting at the London Design Biennale, as well as typewriter artist Kasper Pincis. Completing the magazine, Spanish Alex Popa illustrated an essay on dog fashion and couture by social anthropologist Dr Birgitta Huse.
Fashion Director Margherita Gardella and her team offer valuable perspectives on both current and timeless fashion statements such as the universe of Rei Kawakubo and a contemporary reinterpretation of Coco Chanel. The intersection of fashion and art is explored in a spread about Victorian artist Lord Leighton who left one of the most beautiful houses in London to visit.
Helen McCrory – An exclusive editorial with the internationally acclaimed theatre and film actress shot at Dennis Severs’ House features in this issue. The detailed drawings on the cover are by Colin Verdi, taking inspiration from the aesthetic of the magazine, Helen McCrory and the world of stage and screen that she is part of.
Dovydas Kreivys – For this cover, Dovydas Kreivys stars in a poetic art shoot alongside Ben Slade, before a backdrop of 17th century rare and handmade tapestries.
Andrej Halasa – In a photographic technique extensively explored by photographer Ram Shergill with Leica cameras, Andrej Halasa was photographed at a long exposure time which allowed him to be ‘painted with light’, creating an abstract effect. The concept is explored further inside the publication, in collaboration with artist Julieta Hernández Adame, using graphic letterpress designs.
