Can Fashion Mean Wellness For Our Skin And Planet?

What is the future of textiles? House of Gharats is pursuing an exciting new research project into understanding how science and fashion can work in harmony with one another to improve our health and wellness.

A growing consciousness about the importance of caring for ourselves and the environment has evolved in recent years. We are embarking on a journey to discover more about the design of textiles which act as “second skin” to our bodies and can help explore unseen aspects of our lives, for example emotion, health and sleep. These textiles are engineered to become part of our lives, bodies and environment, a step beyond the world of fashion and aesthetics.

One With Nature

Technological advancements in the textile industry means that the function of fabric is steadily evolving, allowing us to find new ways of integrating wellness into the clothes we put on our skin.

Our new Blue Fashion Scarf and Sleep Collection has been been inspired by both the idea of wellness and the work of Neri Oxman, a highly influential MIT professor, whose designs focus on “naturing” something into being. Her philosophy is centred around a design arc which begins with nature inspired design, and ends with design inspired nature.

In order to reflect this core ethos and create a feeling of wellness for you, we are working with SeaCell™, a material made from sustainably sourced seaweed. Seaweed is an incredibly nutritious natural resource, enriched with essential elements and minerals which can relieve skin diseases, reduce inflammation and soothe itchiness.

One With Nature

Artwork Series by House Of Gharats

The corresponding artworks with this page are part of our One with Nature series. Our founder and creative director Neishaa Gharat wanted to create collage works of art that display the beauty of various different habitats on our planet. The humans in each of these artworks are one with the natural world around them, reminding us of our inherent connection to the environment. This interconnectedness is what makes us human, and is the reason that caring for the Earth is a way of caring for ourselves. The relationship between fashion — our outward layer that accompanies us through the environment — and wellness — our inward being that is constantly aware of these powerful connections — can help us explore just how important it is to practice a life that is one with nature.

Coral -- The vibrancy and diversity of coral reefs draw attention to the relationships between all living things under the surface. When we dive into these warm waters, we feel that profound connectivity with this whole other world.

ASAP: As Sustainable As Possible As Soon As Possible

A global movement towards wellness fashion is supported by the UN’s Fashion Charter for Climate Action. With a vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, one of their main goals is to prioritise the production of materials which have a low impact on our environment. Investing into wellness textiles complements this vision, being made up of organic ingredients which are good for our planet, they cause low pollution in production and can decompose faster.

House of Gharats supports innovation into textiles which care for our skin and planet. This helps pave a pathway towards the decarbonisation of the fashion industry, while promoting a conscious lifestyle centred around wellness and positivity. Our aim is to take steps to inspire society to protect our planet and build an opportunity for positive change for future generations.

We are excited about the potential that textile innovation has to shape the future of fashion and science. For the next post in our fashion meets wellness series, we are researching how medical textiles can improve both our mental and physical health.

Rainforest -- An important place for air purification, the Equatorial rainforests are the heart of our Earth. Where the sun shines and rain falls daily, we must show love for these trees and their inhabitants through a deeper awareness of their vital role as part of our home.
