Sleep Revolution
Wellness For The Mind, Body & Soul
Sleep is our superpower, a gift we’re all born with that can transform our mental, physical and spiritual health. Today, our fast-paced, modern world demands more time awake and less time asleep — with extortionate amounts of screen time filling up these long hours. With this shift away from natural healthy habits, we are living in a sleep-deprived society, one that’s disconnected from the magic of the night and the power of rest. We were inspired by Dr Matthew Walker, a sleep scientist and professor, is devoted to reconnecting humanity with this precious tool for memory, mood, restoration, healing and spiritual development … essentially everything having to do with our holistic wellbeing. At House of Gharats, the nature of the human mind and body inspires and informs our design thinking. In this three part series, we will discuss Walker’s ground breaking research on the regenerative capacity of sleep to heal our mind, body and soul, helping us lead longer and healthier lives. Join us at House of Gharats as we explore the power of sleep and inspire you to do the same. Wishing you a good night’s rest always, from our House to yours.
Sleep: Cure For The Mind
The Economics of Sleep: Society’s neglect of sleep is an issue for both our health and economy. According to the RAND corporation, the estimated annual cost of insufficient sleep in GDP terms is around 320 billion pounds. This figure reflects the ill health, motor-skill impairments, poor memory and lack of creativity that workers suffer when they lose sleep.
Sleep: Cure For The Body
Sleep is a restorative, recovery phase which prepares the body for the next episode of wakefulness, and is a process which links our brain and body. The brain is intrinsically connected to our quality of sleep and controls our most important bodily functions, such as our heart and blood. As we sleep, our active bodies find recovery and restoration in the strong mind-body connections made through this unconscious state.
Sleep and Spirituality
For a long time, sleep has been underrated as a means of achieving spiritual wellbeing. It is a curious, mysterious part of our lives, and science can tell us more about sleep deprivation than sleep itself. Why do we spend a third of our day unconscious, not able to remember the last eight hours of our life? This is a time of spiritual healing, realisation and connection, the time we travel to the parts of ourselves that can connect with greater forces within. We are taking inspiration from the work of Deepak Chopra, a world-renowned author and advocate of meditation, who believes that sleep can be used as a tool to become closer to our souls.
